Operations:
The project’s vessels operate from Wanchese, NC located on historic Roanoke Island. The project area is focused on the upper Currituck Banks near the town of Corolla, NC in the Atlantic Ocean. Our operations do not impair tourist or fishing activities, we simply ask that mariners maintain a safe and courteous distance from our vessels and divers as they would any other. Our equipment and activities are not something that poses an environmental or ecological threat. The bulk of our work is hands off: surveying, measuring, drawing, mapping, photography, and documentation work. Everything is properly documented before anything is disturbed. We do not employ "blowers, mail boxes, prop wash deflectors" or other damaging excavation methods.
Remote Sensing Survey Technology
Marine surveys require sophisticated instrumentation and experienced operators to be successful. We employ the latest in underwater search technology, and our staff has many years of experience to add to the project.
Side Scan Sonar
Sidescan sonar is a technology that is used to "see" acoustically underwater. The technology is based on emitting pulses of sound energy laterally underwater and electronically listening to the sound waves that are reflected back by objects and the seafloor. The end result is a near video quality acoustic image of the target area.
Magnetometer Surveys
A Magnetometer is used to detect the presence or absence primarily of ferrous metals (Iron & steel). We use the latest technology Cesium vapor magnetometers coupled with highly accurate positioning systems to accurately map anomalies found. Magnetometer technology is a principle tool use to locate anchors, weaponry, ships fittings, hardware, cables, and many other items commonly associated with shipwrecks. A magnetometer is also extremely useful for locating objects that are covered with sediment. The instrument is utilized by pulling a towfish behind a vessel over a predetermined search grid. The data is stored digitally using onboard computers and is processed with complex software employed to further identify any magnetic anomalies.
